Miracles After Walt Whitman
To me, everything from the from the fresh whiffs of clean air,
To the intricately designed human being is a miracle,
Every astonishing “Lucy” and “Turkana Boy,”
Every organelle inside human’s cells that work together unbelievably,
Every evolved, extraordinary human being,
Every strand of unique DNA separating everybody apart completely,
Every natural element scattered throughout the world,
All these to me are profound, exuberant miracles.
To me, science is quite miraculous;
The planets it spawns, the people it makes,
The creatures like fawns, and the world it shapes,
What creates miracles yet is a miracle in itself?
Science does; it is magical.

Inspired by a simple homework assignment, my love for poetry was sparked by reading Walt Whitman's poem titled "Miracles."
The poem I wrote was primarily about answering Walt Whitman’s overarching question: what do you find to be a "miracle?" Miracles are completely up for interpretation and can embody a wide variety of aspects in life. When thinking about what has defined my experience in life thus far, it is all summed up by this one word: miracle. I'm not talking just about spirituality, and the "miracle of life," but rather the series of complex events and set of rules otherwise referred to as science. My mind will never stop thinking, analyzing, questioning, hypothesizing, and repeating the process over and over again, because of my burning passion and devoted interest in this topic.
Perhaps the greatest answers science provides are the ones to come, which will be learned in the future. I think the epiphany represents and wraps up this poem beautifully; it says, “Science is magical,” which is such a broad and overall exciting theme to ponder and explore. Just like the openness and wide spectrum of magic, science is so broad and terrifically open; there is so much that has been explored and so much more to be explored in the future.
Enjoy! :)
