All of us get lost in the darkness, but dreamers learn to steer by the stars.- Rush

He flits and flutters through the night
Quiet, as to not wake anyone and give them a fright
Tired eyes stare at the ceiling
He blends in with the shadows, never too revealing
While you ponder your day and what lies ahead,
He darts in while you’re thinking of things unsaid
You don’t even notice that time unravels so fast
One glance at the clock and 3 hours have passed!
You blame it on how tired you are
Things like that happen when you are exhausted, it’s not that bizarre
But you, like others, make excuses and rationalize things you don’t understand, Things that don’t make sense and were never planned
The time thief has fallen victim to logic and common sense
I suppose he is glad the humans of today are so very dense
He comes and he visits every house, stealing away precious time
Every second he snatches tastes so sublime
He lives on borrowed hours he stole,
The minutes he takes renew and feed his soul
He is immortal, never aging or dying
No company does he take, except the time he is buying
No feelings penetrate his hungry, aching soul
The only thing the time thief craves is moments to try to fill the black hole
So the next time you lie in bed and realize hours have gone by
Realize he has paid you a visit to suck you dry
Glance at the shadows and you might see a flash
But don’t look too closely, or what you see will surely be the last

I had to write a poem for my creative writing class and was having a hard time thinking of a concept. I looked at the clock and two hours had gone by without me even noticing. It seemed like such a weird concept to me that people can just lose time like that. I personified it and gave it a name and this poem was born from it.
