Across an ocean
Of moons and stars,
There lies a planet
Much like ours.
The natives there look a lot like us,
But the way they act
Is quite a plus.

No wars do they wage,
They don’t kill out of rage.
They don’t have any prejudice,
A goal of theirs is selflessness.
And above all they are kind,
Something us humans can’t keep in mind.

This is where I want to be,
My own utopian society.
To get there it could take us long,
But I believe this is where we belong.

It is where we belong,
Right?
I stop,
And think,
And ponder.

Because,
If we really were to go,
We’d bring along our flaws, you know.
We would poison that poor planet down,
Away from the beautiful thing we found.
We’d turn it to a second earth,
Giving our scarred paths a rebirth.

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece was written for a poetry contest, and it began as a sing-song poem about traveling to another world, but as I further revised it, it evolved into the poem with a deeper meaning that you see here. I feel it highlights human nature and our flaws, and should make people have a urge to do something better for our future.
