Triumphant Songs
On one serene summer's night,
Pure beasts fall drowsy,
While owls rap in their flight.
On one serene summer's night,
Rich men soundly rest,
While possessed soldiers all fight.
On one serene summer's night,
pure children hear tales,
while juveniles miss the light.
On one serene summer's night,
All those who suffer,
Fail to sing songs of triumph.
On one serene summer's day,
Many people choose,
To always remain the same.
On the serene summer's day,
One must find out how,
To stray away from customs.
Many people dance and sing,
To a single note,
While others choose creating . . .
Creating another tune,
Living in the light,
Moving without a command,
Shooting for the moon,
Choosing to break traditions,
Dancing out of line,
Singing a song of triumph,
Learning to live life,
As it was meant to be lived.

I wanted to write a collection of haikus. About halfway through the piece did I realize that haikus have a 5-7-5 syllable pattern, not a 7-5-7 pattern. Instead of trashing the haikus, I made them an entire piece, organizing them to make sense as one poem. I like to call it a "ukiah" for its backwards syllable pattern. People should learn how to be fearless in breaking the rule. People today are used to being led by leaders, when they are, most likely, more capable of being their own leaders. Of course, the messages for any poem, including this piece, have numerous interpretations and it is our job as a human to not blindly agree with other people's interpretations.
