Still Minds
17 years of age
Not a care in the world
2 more weeks, he thought
His life changed once he stepped
foot onto a plane to the West Coast.
“Faster, faster, faster.” They yelled loudly.
Beads of sweat, dripping down his forehead.
“What am I thinking? Why did I do this?”
2 weeks pass, a piece of paper in an envelope
changed his mind set, even a small smile appeared.
Sitting at a desk, he writes a small letter to the girl he loves.
“I miss you so much, boot is hard. But, I’ll make it through, knowing I can come home to you.” he signed the letter first, middle, last.
13 weeks gone by fast
He stands in the front of a crowd
Receiving an emblem, with the logo of his service on it
Before leaving the perimeter, he trades his combat boots in
for a pair of dress blues.
18 years of age
Now a young man
He comes home to his loved ones.
The people who support his tough decisions.
Home at last, he thought.
