I am at peace
The world sits still as I sit still
The breeze flows gently
Through the trees and just past me
I’m not thinking of anything back home
Just the world beyond my bow,
A whole world separate from us
A community for themselves
I see the squirrels jump between trees
And rush through the leaves.
Everything is silent,
Even the song birds.
Then he struts in-
A deer bigger than all the others in the county
Slowly I stand up as he continues to walk
I draw back my bow unnoticed by anything
He is still strutting and I need him to stop.
I whistle and say “hey.”
He stops and looks up from the ground
He was no longer worried about his meal
But instead his life that was in my hands.
He scans the field and I let it fly
It soars through the air
Unstoppable now the arrow makes contact
A perfect hit and I have won,
But as soon as I won I woke up.
It was just a dream,
And I sigh with disappointment
To start another day.
