Dreaming of Frost
The heart is still aching to seek
To ravel them one by one-
Such heaps of broken glass…
to sweep away.
I never noticed it from here before:
Life is too much like a pathless wood-
I doubted if I should ever come back...
the best way out is always through.
I shall set forth for somewhere
I shall make the reckless choice-
Till we lose all measure of pace…
slow,
slow!
A heartfelt prayer for the poor of God
I found God wasn’t there.
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain…
something more of the depths-and then I lost it.
Always wrong to the light, so never seeing
From what I’ve tasted of desire-
Nothing gold can stay…
and nothing happened: day was all but done.
And the thought of the heart’s desire
It keeps smouldering at the roots-
With the slow, smokeless burning of decay…
let me be the one.
Don’t carry it to someone else this time
So low for long, they never right themselves-
And not one but hung limp, not one was left…
but I have promises to keep.
I’d like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over-
And so I dream of going back to be
and that has made all the difference.

Dreaming of Frost is a cento poem I wrote entirely of Robert Frost pieces, as you may recognize favourites such as "Fire and Ice", "The Road Not Taken", and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening". Frost is one of my very favourite poets because of his strong insight on the world of nature and how the wilderness acts as a being, which not many people see it as. I really respect this take on the world. When I first started writing "Dreaming of Frost", I wanted it to be about nature, but I soon realized that what I was conjuring was not, in fact, about nature, but rather dreams. Although in his original poems, Frost was writing about trees and the way they drooped and dragged in the wintertime, I took it as dying dreams. It's somewhat of a story when you read it through, as someone expecting everything to be okay and never expecting that things can get in the way of their dreams, but they realized that God is not there to help them through the times when they needed him. So, this is my take on what Robert Frost was attempting to achieve in his words of wisdom.
