UnSolitude

He was my friend, he was, the best buddy yet,

Wherever we were we would wonderfully feel,

Like the first time we had ever met.

Splash! We always like to play and get wet.

Or together in the sunshine we have a meal,

Like the first time we had ever met.

Sometimes snowballs we scatter go Splat!

And those days would come back like a wheel,

Over and over again it will get.

There are days that we look back at.

Some we laughed over and those that were ideal,

And vividly recall those Saturday afternoons we would chat.

Summertime some seven sandcastles set.

When those rough rascals ruined it we would gently make it heal,

And let the memories recover we would let.

These memories are metal chains, strong as they can ever get,

They can always give us a lot to reveal,

That our friendship conquers the strength of anything with no regret,

Like the first time we had ever met.

The author's comments:

The purpose of this poem was to evoke the childhood memories of the protagonist, the wonderful days where he and his best buddy would hang out and do all the stuff they enjoy doing.

For example, Stanzas 2-5 shows all the activities that the two friends play, and the diction of words also make the overall tone more positive. Such words include “sunshine”, “gently”, “laughed” and “wonderfully”. This is to show how much fun the duo had in their childhood, and how the protagonist looks back at the past.

Sound Devices are also used. Onomatopoeia was included for words like “Splash” and “Splat”. Alliteration was used in lines 2, 7, 13 and 14. As this poem is a villanelle, rhymes were included for first and third lines as well as second lines on its own. The overall sound was meant to be catchy and attract the reader’s attention.

Imagery was used in line 8, where the wheel represents the days coming back again and again and that they did it regularly. In line 14, gently make it heal was meant to make the poem sound like the two friends would quickly patch up any arguments and bury the hatchet, for they did not want to break their friendship. Line 16 was meant to show the strength of their friendship, that they had forged such a close bond, and they are very close and inseparable.

Overall, I used these devices to help set the mood as well as show the reader some distinct image in their minds, so that they can fully appreciate this friendship.
