Winter Come
Winter: the world pauses for three incredibly long months and we can’t prevent the inevitable. My friend Callie is smothered in warmth while we wait for her mother outside the park, but I am in tatters. My clothes drape loosely off my skin because I spent my money on toast and the wind enters every open pore of me. Callie wants my jacket. She looks colder than I am, but I tell her I need it more. My jacket is all I have. Callie is turning red from anger. She should give me her coat, her fuzzy bear fur coat, because she has enough anger and fury to keep herself heated the entire month. Ultimately, I give Callie my jacket because she is beauty, she is a goddess. I will freeze stiff like the stems of flowers in the summer, but she, with her anger and fire and seductive presence, will alter the world. Callie is Jesus. She will melt the Earth in three months and I will be embedded in the snow. Finally, Callie’s mother comes and her camp fire vibe is gone.
