She could lie to your face
And you could never tell.
She said she wanted space,
That was when the curtain fell.

Dark blue and black
Falling all around her heart.
Too far gone to turn back.
She wishes you saw at the start.

As terrible things fill her mind
And she finally gives up hope,
You finally find
That she cannot cope.

She shows you her scars.
Products of too much thought
At night while counting stars
These demons she so discreetly fought.

Now that you know,
Could you read her expressions?
Could you feel her let go?
Could you hear her silent confessions?

The author's comments:
I have struggled with self-injury and eating disorders for years as a result of abuse and negative family life. This poem was one that I wrote to my family to explain how the depression was for me and how I wished they would have seen before they did. I struggled for three years before anyone found out and I got help. I wanted to write this to explain to families and friends of people who have dealt and/or are dealing with this kind of thing how it truly is. It is not a simple thing, depression is a monster. It slowly wipes you away from everything and puts you in a downward spiral to nowhere. The "curtain" leading the poem symbolizes the depression, while in the first stanza the girl lies to people ajnd says she's okay when everything is starting to fall apart. In the third stanza, she gets suicidal ideations and gives up, attempting to take her life and the person she is writing to/about finds out. In the fourth stanza, she shows the person her scars from self injuring and talks about why they are there and how she fought demons without anyone finding out. In the last stanza, she is asking questions to the person, wondering if now that they knew, if they saw the signs before without realizing it. This is how depression went for me and within my family.
