The ashen moon
Engulfed in an ebony sky
Lay perfectly reflected
Like a mirror
Off the placid dark waters.
Crickets orchestrate a symphony
While bats perform a waltz in the sky above.
Perched on a decaying branch
The bright golden eyes attended to the show.

A mouse scampers back to its burrow
Charmed with a newly found treasure in its cheeks.
Yet the mouses joyous suddenly seizes
Turning into desperation and horror
Squaking
As its body is crunched in savage jaws.
It’s elegantly carried away
By an auburn coat and white tip tail
Bobbing into the darkness.

The eyes observe the pitiful obscenity.
The symphony has ceased.
The wan moon sits alone in the sky.
The eyes grow bronze
and coo into the silence.

Emerging from darkness
A deadly beast enters into the ghastly light of the moon
Its grey coat shimmers in the reflection of the waters.
Its menacing dark eyes meet the sensible ones above.
Another coo.
Obediently the beast disappears back into the forest.

A deafening cry echoed in the silence.

The beast returned
Laying the mutilated auburn carces by the polished waters.
The dim eyes of the beast met the ones above yet again
And as they grew golden
The beast looked down
Its duty fulfilled
It slyly slipped back into the darkness.

Perched on the branch
The golden gaze is diverted across the peaceful waters.
The symphony continues
The bats return to their midnight waltz
And the moon sinks lower and lower in the cold malice sky.
