I Can Do This

It is a National Field Archery Association's National Championship
Hosted in in Louisville, Kentucky.
My competition just shot a seven.
All I need to win is a nine.
I can do this

I take my place on the shooting line.
An extreme fear builds inside of me.
Over the murmuring of the crowd behind me,
I can hear my heart thumping in my chest.
I can do this.

As I look back I see my coach mouth, "you can do this."
I look down to retrieve an arrow from my quiver.
While I'm sliding my arrow on to the rest
I take a deep breath.
I can do this.

The crowd falls silent behind me
I place my fingers on the string and draw back.
I look through the aperture and place the pin right in the center.
I can do this.

I release the arrow,
the subtle slap of my string echoes through the corridor.
The arrow sails through the air
It lands in the bulls-eye with a triumphant thud.
I am the new national champion.
I did it.
