In seeing the Dark Knight
I have wished of Gotham departing
And leaving in the wake of death and darkness
Has left my heart mended.

Oh! What is not a fanatic by night
To him whose eyes are cast
On bats around him in a cave
Turned back upon his past?

That evil nightmare-that evil nightmare,
While all of Gotham were praising
Has depressed me into a horrid dream
A lonely soul following

What is that darkness, through sun and light,
So still and so close
What could there be more black darkness
In lie’s night-star?

1Poem modeled after A Dream by Edgar Allen Poe

In visions of the dark night ?
I have dreamed of joy departed?
But a waking dream of life and light ?
Hath left me broken-hearted.

Ah! what is not a dream by day ?
To him whose eyes are cast ?
On things around him with a ray ?
Turned back upon the past?

That holy dream - that holy dream, ?
While all the world were chiding, ?
Hath cheered me as a lovely beam ?
A lonely spirit guiding.

What though that light, thro' storm and night,
So trembled from afar?
What could there be more purely bright ?
In Truth's day-star?
