Where were you?
Where were you last spring when I expressed my illness to my mother?
When the tears hidden by walls and pillows were now displayed in front of her
Were you at Starbucks laughing with friends?
Or at school finishing a biology lab?
Where were you when my mother thought that she did a horrible job raising me?
Where were you when my mom was asking me if I could make it another day?
Did you hear my mom on the phone with a psychiatrist, words cracking as she made an emergency appointment?
Did you hear my mom shoo away my nosey little brother?
Did you see how my mother looked at me?
Did you no longer feel a burden from trying to live with demons destroying your mind?
Did you cry so much your throat felt like it was no longer going to function?
Where were you when my mom held me in her arms, my mascara tears soaking her shirt?
Where were you when I told my mom I had severe depression and didn’t want to live my life anymore?
I was in my mother’s room, with the 5 o’clock news on in the background
My head, cradled in her arms
Her softly saying everything was going to be ok
Where were you when I my heart was beating as fast as a drum from Blue Man Group?
Or when I finally realized I was going to get help?
Were you with friends, talking about all the beach trips you were going to take this summer?
Or helping your friend in a similar situation, like my friends should’ve been doing?
Where are you now that I’m finally ok?
Are you the same?
Or did the demons strike you?
If you’re asking me where I’d be, I’d be by your side
Because getting it off of your chest
would save your life
