Fort Jackson

Emma Vann

The narrow wooden bridge carries us over the smelly marsh into Fort Jackson.
The dark black cannon fires into the gloomy night.
The overwhelmed nurse pours Quinine into the tired soldier’s cups early in the morning.
The cold rain hits our faces as we eagerly anticipate that loud cannon fire.

The light slowly twinkles from the embers of the dying fire.
A sudden blast explodes from the huge cannon.
Lowly burning lanterns dimly ignite the nurse’s infirmary.

Bulging through the brick wall, the cannon blasts into the foggy night’s air.
Screams echo in the night as the rifle commander gives his orders.
Grumbles come from the worn tired soldiers in the morning before taking the bitter Quinine.

Was it worth the soldiers not taking the Quinine because it tasted bad?
How many brave soldiers died in the exact spots where I stood?

Fort Jackson intrigues the curious minds of all who wish to know the exciting history of Savannah’s past wars.
