Serene Cemetery

The fractured sidewalks lead people through the elegant gates if the Colonial Park Cemetery.
Colossal, mossy trees provide shade for those resting underneath their large roots.
Memorials keep each and every person’s legacy alive for years upon years.

Light tries to illuminate the grounds, but it is blocked by the large trees.
Where the light does burst through, it is dim and hazy and very scarcely scattered about.
It is a bit murky, but that must be the way all cemeteries seem to be.

Sweeping through the cemetery grounds, the wind whistles almost silently.
The soft padding footsteps of visitors can barely be made out, as not to disturb the graves.
Leaves rustle and sink to the soil noiselessly.

What were the lives of the people here like?
Am I the only one who is so fascinated by the cemetery?

The cemetery ignites a fire inside my mind to learn more about all of the lost souls who
ended up here.

Calm
Quiet
Peaceful

This piece was written as an assignment for school after taking a field trip to Savannah, Georgia. Each person was to select their favorite place we visited on our field trip and write a six room poem about it. I had heard of these types of poems before, but had never written one so I was excited for this assignment. I am quite happy with how it turned out.
