Five syllables here
Seven more syllables there.
I will say no more.

I swung the bowling ball,
But it slipped and flew backwards.
You had to be there.

It was not funny,
Her fear of cats and puppies
Was hilarious.

I don’t know how to
Juice. Lemon-squeezy, for
Me, isn’t easy-peasy

He tried to make a
Turkey call, but only the
Chickens came running

As I gaze upon
The stars, I realize how
Small we truly are

The wind howls by day
But whispers secrets to me,
Once night has fallen

Alone with the trees,
I have nowhere else to be,
My thoughts and the trees

Wishing on the night
Sky, wanting to hear Mother’s
Gentle lullabies

Dandelion in
The grass, your time has passed, this
Cold September day

People are flying
The ashes are frightening
Children are crying
The towers come crashing
There is nothing left to do

There is a spider-web
Stuck in my head, the wind can
Not shake it, nothing
Will break it, it’s not so bad
Now that ideas grasp on

The beautiful trees
Many shades of orange, red,
And green, in the cool
Autumn breeze, the leaves dance on
Down while falling from the trees

The author's comments:
These series of peoms I've written are of senryus, haikus, and tankas. The first time I ever encountered haikus was during elementary school, but I didn’t even hear of a tanka or senryu poem until this year. Not having written poems with strict syllable count in so long made it a bit difficult for me. From the three types of poems, I would have to say writing senryu’s was the easiest for me because I enjoy making jokes. Another difficulty I had was with the tankas and haikus; because it’s hard to write something in such a serious tone, without making be depressing.
Most of my inspiration came from my surroundings and experiences. For instance, the senryu about bowling was something that had actually recently happened to me. Also, when I was having troubles finding another poem to write, I used that to create the tanka on spider-webs in my, which just resembled that my head had already emptied out all my ideas. Strangely enough, I received my idea about 911 from watching my younger brother destroy the towers he had made from toy build blocks. Looking at what was going on around me, and on what I was/had experienced, helped me write my poems.
