Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold,
Her early leaf's a flower,
But only so an hour,
Before leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day,
Nothing gold can stay
-Robert Frost

Gone is the smile, gone is the sparkle in your beautiful eye
I was there from the beginning when you used to put up a fight
You used to laugh, you were so alive, now I only see you cry

I know how much you struggle, how much you just want to say goodbye
Be your old self, fight back with all your powerful might,
But now gone is the smile, gone is the sparkle in your beautiful eye

I remember the happy you, and I look to the sky,
As though I might catch a glimpse of you as you begin your flight
You used to laugh, you were so alive, now I only see you cry

I hate her for what she’s done to you, I just want to know why
Why she had to darken a soul that was once so beautifully light
But now gone is the smile, gone is the beautiful sparkle in your eye

Someone with your inner beauty is nearly impossible to come by
But she wiped that away, leaving sorrow as though she had the right
You used to laugh, you were so alive, now I only see you cry

I love you, you should know, so please stop marring your beautiful thigh
Please, put it down, I love you, everything’s going to be alright
But now gone is the smile, gone is the sparkle in your beautiful eye
You used to laugh, you were so alive, now I only see you cry

The author's comments:
This piece is a villanelle poem, inspired by two of my closest friends. I was trying to convey my feelings having too look on as they go through depression and self harm. Having seen them when they were happy, it's especially hard seeing them now as they light has faded from their eyes.
