Time is no one's friend
Yonder in the garden, he always was
The sun beatin down on his back never bothered him for
He was as strong as an ox and had worked all his life
Always carryin a pocket knife
“No time for piddlin,” he would say
But no matter what, we always played
He always made time, he was always there
Holding my hand or sittin in his chair
Once we came in, he pulled out his board
Black and white
Placing his checkers down for a fight
“Ready to play?” he would say
I always raised cane
When I thought he would win
But he would just laugh
For he had already given in
And what I didn’t know
Was that these times may seem slow
But life is short lived
And sometimes people must go
The man in the garden
Who sat in his chair,
Was soon in a hospital
And not quite there
He put up a fight, still strong in his will
He said to me “I’m getting better every day.”
But we knew what was wrong,
We didn’t know what to say.
I was scared
For this man who held my hand
Who gave me memories
So many y’all won’t understand
But in the end
Time is no one’s friend
And the man who the sun could not bother’
Had to leave, so I say sadly “Rest in peace grandfather.
