Turn, leap, jump, and fly all the things
I think about at night.
Whenever I dance I get this feeling
Inside.

In any case
Though I think about it I dream
About it…can’t live without it.
No matter where I am at or what
I’m doing there is always that one thing
That’s on my mind.

I admit without shame I can’t focus
In class because all I can think about
Is this life of dance.

Which causes me to drift off
And wish I could lift off.
Drift off as if
A balloon is flying in the air.

What’s worse is I just want to graduate.
So I can live the life and DREAM
Of a professional dancer.

But, I don’t want to talk I would rather walk;
Walk across that stage let alone
Dance across that stage.

Now in fact I have to pay attention
In class in order to get pass.
I feel like I am almost there
With just ONE jump in the air.

The author's comments:
In the poem “Focused” by Breeze Odums-Andrews showed great diction. The choices of words she chose made the poem deeper. It didn’t make the poem to straight forward it led readers to think. A word that she picked that did stick out was the title word “Focused”, because the poem really relates to it. Another literary device she uses is imagery. For example when she states in line 12-14 how she sits and class and drift off cause all she thinks about is dance it was very easy to picture that part in your head. This poem was very moving, and it made readers think about a passion they have, and they can’t give up on it.
