College: A Costly Education
The scholar, with diploma in hand
Tries to take that next step in this great land.
He’s faced with costs beyond his means
And the working world, he finds, is not what it seems.
Costs have risen, almost triple his old man’s
And he fails to find work and put food in the pan.
Loans are weighing on his heart and his mind
The money it seems, becomes harder and harder to find.
He knocks on the doors of businesses galore
An education, he was promised, would be what he hoped for.
Empty-handed, disheartened and broke, he returns home
To bills, uncertainty, and debt, all alone.
Returning to the basement with his life all muddled
To find him searching, but puzzled.
Why did he go to college for all those years
Only to end up sitting here?
