Temporary

I am a teenager temporarily trapped,
in a world that expects me to act like the adult I will soon become.
Yet still get treated like the child I no longer remain.

Attempting to figure out my future is not as easy as it seemed.
On shaky legs I try to find independence,
only to discover there are times I will fall.

A world filled with places to see,
and lessons to be taught.
I've been to some pretty amazing places,
and there are still ones out there I haven't yet.
There's things I've learned, usually the hard way.
Most of the time it's taken me a while to figure out what life is trying to teach me.

My parents have taught me well,
and I am almost ready to stand on my own feet.
While it must be hard for them to see their little girl grow up,I hope they know I'll be okay.

More mistakes will be made,
and learned from.
Choices I never dreamed I'd make.

I am a teenager temporarily trapped, in a world I hope to soon understand.

I had to write a theme poem for the Creative Writing class I took during the second semester of my sophomore year. A theme poem is where you write a poem based on the theme or structure of another poem. I chose to write my poem based on the theme of the one I found- growing up. This was my favorite poem I wrote for the Prose & Poetry unit in the class.
