The Perfect Shot
The last, crucial minutes were coming to a close
The fans clutched their seats, to their feet they arose
Both sides exhausted, breath was now short
Such a game couldn’t be played on a diamond or court
“Over here!” yelled a teammate as I looked for a pass
My eyes met their jersey all covered in grass
Cleat met ball, the perfect combination
The impact was great, a wonderful sensation
Ponytail flying, she dashed passed a foe;
a smirk on her face, how she put on a show!
Pass after pass, the pace was too quick,
If one watched for long, they may feel sick!
Now in the box, the keeper stood ready
Her face was grim, her gloves rather sweaty
Invincible she seemed, no goals had been scored
On her line she stood, her eyes looking bored
“Shoot!” we yelled to our fellow teammate
She struck the ball hard, to the goal it flew straight
With a twist and a punch the keeper dove hard,
the goal was saved but up went the card.
“Foul!” we shrieked, our friend now in pain
The keeper stood innocent, “Get on with the game!”
The whistle, of course, stopped all fair play
“One shot” said the ref, “We don’t have all day!”
My team and I looked from friend to friend
Who shall be chosen to bring this to an end?
Eyes settled on me and I felt my pulse quicken
I will take the shot for them, for I am their captain
Ball on the mark, I picked my spot
Bottom left corner, it was worth a shot
One step, two steps, three steps back
Confidence in shooting is something I lack
My team cheered me on as I ran to the ball
I blocked out the sound of the excited fans’ call
One more step and I collided with a Crack!
Time seemed to stop, my knees had gone slack.
There was no hope for poor Keeper,
It was truly the perfect shot
She has lost the fierce game
If only the ball had been caught!
