Hermes
How slow the life of the messenger goes
Carrying messages of love for those
Whose heart songs ring out in echoes
But love doesn't always come to those who seek it
Cupid doesn't just serve those he deems fit
And if given the chance Hermes would quit
Wanting a taste of his own love for a bit
But he's got a job and someone's got to do it
Still feels the pain but he works through it
Waiting for the day when he'll receive
A message from his own Aphrodite
But she never comes
No, not for the one
With wings on his shoes
'Cause he doesn't get to choose
Who gets love and who gets none
Yet still he flies till his job is done
Oh, how long the messenger hopes
For a love to help him cope
With life's cruelest trick
Of always handing him the short end of the stick
But love doesn't always come to those who seek it
Cupid doesn't just serve those he deems fit
And if given the chance Hermes would quit
Hardened by age and bitterness
How alone the messenger dies
With no one there to stay by his side
No one to hear his longing cries
How cold Hermes' life ends
With the unresolved quest of finding a friend
And how he prayed for his own letter to be sent
But it was never meant
For him to belong
And so, on his own, the messenger passes on
On to a world where every word is said to him
Where love isn't relayed but freely given
And the messenger'f free to keep what's sent
For now the messenger is the recipient
Oh how grand the messenger feels
When the role of the messenger is no longer real
