It’s when your mind is muddled
And your mouth has a mind of its own.
When your head is frantic and struggles
With endless thoughts overgrown
When your knees begin to tremble
And your hands start to shake
When your words get all jumbled
And you’re just waiting to make a mistake

Among commas and semi-colons
You try to find your meaning
And after “well”s and “er”s and “um”s
You contemplate just turning around and leaving
When you’re trapped in a metaphor
And lost in a simile,
You’re never quite sure
If it’s the proper analogy

At last you give up, you say you’re done
And berate yourself for your inability.
The opportunity has left, it’s passed, it’s gone
And you’re left wallowing in a pool of inadequacy.
By now you simple want to disappear or runaway
Or perhaps hibernate for 10 years instead.
So you conclude that at the end of the day
Some things are better left unsaid.

The author's comments:
"Alexithymia" means the inability to express one's thoughts, feelings, or emotions. I've experienced this sensation far too often than I'd like, and this poem was my attempt at articulating the feeling of trying to say something, but not being able to.
