"The Journey on the Gridiron"
It starts in winter lifting weights each day;
Hoping the grind of the offseason soon will pay.
Then spring comes along for a chance to shine;
Two weeks to display for coaches the potential of mine.
I strap my helmet and walk to freshly cut grass,
Hustling on every play, both run and pass.
Summer is quickly upon us to get stronger and condition,
Working as a team with our minds on a mission.
As August approaches, summer workouts near an end,
And our team resolutely hopes to win and contend.
School returns, hinting our first game draws near.
The outcome of our toil will soon be closer.
The first game finally arrives, the action far from bland.
We earn a victory with our defense’s goal-line stand.
The season continues, each week presenting hardship.
But week after week we’d prevail, with no panic or slip.
At season’s end, we had only loss,
Earning ourselves a spot in the state playoffs.
We win the first round game at home.
Ambitions grow to go to the Dome.
A lengthy drive dwells for the second round.
Four hours to Waycross, our team is bound.
Prepared for our arrival, the opponents await,
A game to be one step closer to kings of the state.
A battle wages, the game was no snooze.
Alas, after a hard fight, we lose.
After months of preparing, the season’s at its end.
But next year we will be contenders again.
