A Son's Father

A son loves his father
The father loves his son
The father is amazing
The father is number one

Dad can do no wrong
Dad is perfect; Dad is strong
Dad is great, and for a while
Dad was all that could make me smile

One fine summer in evening late
Turmoil stirs the home
Anger stirring through his head
The father enters his son's own room

The father fights! The father argues!
But the father doesn't know a thing!
Quietly, the son listens
Quietly, the son responds

"Dad, I'm not sure what to say
Because I don't know what she said to you
I'm just not sure she told you the full truth."
And thus Dad leaves the room.

The Dad comes back moments later
Sorrow on his face
What he says, then walks away,
Leaves him - or me? - in disgrace.

"Son, I'm not sure what to do
Your momma's coming to get you soon."
I start to pack my bags
Again, he leaves the room.

Just like he left my mom and me
When I was only three
And now he's walking out of my room
Giving up on me.

The Empire of Dad cannot fall
That's the way it seemed.
Maybe Dad wasn't so great at all
Only in my dreams.

The author's comments:
it turns out i was actually wrong, it was a mutual breakup between both my parents when i was about seven or eight months. my mom married my step-dad when i was three, and in my anger, i mixed up the numbers.
i wrote this for my english class. i had been wanting to write a poem for a while, especially of this topic. this gave me the chance. after reading it to the class the next day, i actually had people saying it was a good poem and everything! it was exciting for me.
