Childhood based on Owen Gromme’s “Gate” (1927)
My eyes wake up to the bright icy blue sky
and my skin warms up from the softness of the sun.
I see all my friends running around the crimson red barn
which holds the horses and bunnies that we adore.
I pass the peeling brown gate that is ready to fall,
and I run along goddess green fields–
speckled with blue, yellow, and red flowers.
I see all the children laughing and playing
as I get closer and closer to the group.
We have no worries as children
and the fields are full of peace.
…
I would do anything to go back to that.
To the sound of chirping birds fluttering in the sky.
To the calmness of the wind breezing past me on my skin.
To the freshness in the air from the trees.
It’s hard to feel grateful in the present–
until we are years past that moment.
