In storms of doubt, I heard the thunder’s roar,

My heart was entangled in this storm’s snare.

A prisoner longing to unlock the door.

His words, a dagger’s cut, an endless sore,

Echoes of pain reverberate, unfair.

In storms of doubt, I hear the thunder’s roar.

I crave to soar away from love’s cruel lore,

A bird confined, trapped in a golden cage.

A prisoner longing to unlock the door.

Each day, a battlefield, a silent war,

His touch is a frost that chills the summer air.

In storms of doubt, I hear the thunder’s roar.

My soul, a fragile thing washed ashore,

A shipwrecked dream lost in a despairing stare.

A prisoner longing to unlock the door.

Oh, cruel twist, this fate I can't ignore,

Bound by chains of love, it’s an intricate trap.

In storms of doubt, I hear the thunder’s roar,

A prisoner longing to unlock the door.

This is a villanelle poem that I wrote for an assignment I had in my dual enrollment, creative writing class called experimenting with form.
