The Spider
Under a cup
Under my bed
Lay the body of a spider
Probably dead
Once full of joy - Scuttling around
Now lifeless
A soul unfound.
Insignificant
Yet so important
To the life of a spider
A small little creature
Trapped in plastic
Yes quite erratic
Nowhere to go
Nothing to see
Life worth living
Wasted by me.

In this set piece I wanted to use rhyming. In the story I wanted to showcase a double meaning. At first it seems as though I am simply talking about a spider. A spider who’s life I had thought was insignificant. The last few lines are meant to lead the reader to the two main meanings.
1) Is your life worth less simply because you are less important?
2) Are we wasting the opportunities that we get?
Should I have hurt the spider? It did nothing, yet I decided I was more important, ending its life. Have I been wasting my time on insignificant things all along? [Life worth living, wasted by me.]
