Ode to the Unknown
Sing for the box:
Of vaults sealed, guarded by locks.
Of presents, ribbon tied into knots.
It may contain something mundane,
But the wonder is sure to entertain!
Sing for the unpreserved:
Of pages torn from books returned.
Home to libraries cursed and burned.
Of priceless works left unsold,
Thrown away to grow mold.
Sing for the legends past:
Of world wonders that couldn’t last.
A lighthouse never to see another mast.
Of the taste of a Babylonian pear,
Grown in a garden, under a king’s care.
Sing for the fish in the sand:
Of which will never rule the land.
Do they wonder, hope to understand,
This unknown world they cannot stand?
Of those yearning to take flight,
For a fish, it’s a pointless plight,
And all the same they dream they might.
