Why Everyone Should Be Free
They told us that we had to leave
Because we were too dumb and naive
We had arrows but they had guns
We shouldn’t have fought we should’ve just run
They looked at us and thought we were ludicrous
And in the end, we were indeed delirious
Because they took our homes and pushed us into slavery
But all I really wanted in life was to be free
My whole life long all I did was believe
And after everything, I know this is a dream that I can achieve
You think that you have won
But for us, this fight has just begun
You drink the clean water, eat the good food, and we get the leftovers which is the dust
Your actions ignite the flames of this fire that is in all of us
We became items for your European shopping spree
But you must've forgotten that we are human beings, not pieces of jewelry
You took everything from us you thieves
And I hope one day what you deserve you will receive
You will be on your knees because it can’t be outrun
And just like everything that you’ve done, it can’t be undone
Just how the whip that you used on me is impervious
But the words you said make me querulous
And I surmise that one day you’ll see
Why everyone should be free

I am Brazilian and this poem is based on how I thought how my ancestors felt when the Portuguese took over Brazil.
