How to Fly: A Seven Step Guide
(step 1) accept that your yellow brick fate
is to fly, fly off the hollow cliff
because the only way to leave the ledge
is to take a step and fall so now just
(step 2) look down. and embrace
that the world below you
can feel so far away, miles out of sight, but
you are not going to fall because of
(step 3) belief: the power of flight is in
you. brace your feet, and
tighten those shoulders and let
a breath tumble into the whistling of
(step 4) the cliff. a familiar sight, you’ve
chickened out of the cavernous call
but this time, this now is a
forgone conclusion. please, please just
(step 5) take a step onto
nothing. the power of flight will
stop you before your toes
touch the bottom and you will finally know
(step 6) the magic— soar through the
skies in a single thought. let your torso
twist and curl into invisible wings
that will carry you beyond and
(step 7) fly, and keep flying.
weightless, like a gauzy cloth whispering
in the wind. no more steps
are needed— this is forever.
