Living With Depression
Living With Depression
Katrina Keyes
6:15 I wake up feeling drained as
If I got no sleep at all,
But in a sense that is true.
You see depression is like an all around brawl
A brawl with myself if I should even
Get up in the morning
But I continue to smile.
In this school I walk these halls staring
Down at my phone because I don’t have enough
Energy to interact with other people
I go to class and and put my head down
And I can already hear my teachers comments
“You’re lazy, do better, it’s like she doesn’t even try”
My eyes fill up with water and I have to demand myself not to cry
But I continue to smile.
You see depression is like being at the bottom of the ocean
Unable to breathe but also unable to drown.
It’s as if you’re stuck in time and everything around you is moving so fast
Then you realized five years have passed.
And nothing has changed. You still feel the low energy spirit always circling you
I think to myself when if this phase gonna pass through
Then you have to come to the sad reality that it's not a phase
It's your life and you just always gotta hope it won't stay this way
But no matter what, hide your emotions
Don’t let them in
Stay at the bottom of the ocean
Continue to smile, even if it's just a grin.

Katrina has been writing poetry since the 7th grade. She first got inspired to write her own because she saw her sister watching slam poetry on youtube and she fell in love with this form of art ever since. She hopes her poems can inspire others to keep writing and never stop.
