The Island of Lost Dreams
Island of Lost Dreams
Inspired by the painting Enchanted Island
I gaze absent-midedly out the side of my canoe,
birds’ beating wings are followed by seagulls’ squawks.
Now I am able to tell where I am, a forbidden island,
filled with the absent thoughts of travelers before me.
High cliffs with jagged rocks planted at the bottom,
perfectly positioned for the dashing of man’s hopes.
Driftwood resembles the bony remains of a beast,
but the hopes leave no remains, they vanish.
Without a trace, it is like they were never there.
I peer over the side and look at my reflection,
the man looking back at me starts to swirl and distort,
until he can no longer be recognized.
After a short time, the reflection is no more.
That is when I know, I am stuck here,
stuck for the rest of the world’s eternity.
The Island of Lost Dreams.
