Unprecedented
With a deafening bang, I watched her shins collide with the wooden bar. She hit the ground with such force I felt the earth shake, and I watched in horror as the medical team carried her off. Terrified, I positioned myself on the springboard, managing a weak salute to the judges. Muscle memory allowed my mind to be focused solely on the unprecedented dismount. I swang once… twice — let go and tucked, flipping backwards through the air. Shocked to discover I’d landed on my feet, I opened my eyes to thunderous cheering and let pure relief wash over me.

My name is Hanna, I am a freshman in the highly gifted magnet program in high school. Gymnastics is a big part of my life, and the short story is about a defining experience I had in gymnastics as a child.
