Ode to Shabbat
Oh Holy day of Shabbat,
Full of prayer and remembrance
I embrace the one that created the world with determination
At the table together,
We cross hands to give gratitude
Bread and fish,
To soup and meat
We all set aside what were doing to eat
You fill the rooms with calmness and relieve
The torah is recited,
Because it is what we believe
As the sun goes down,
And I crawl into bed
My body is full of joy and food
For the next six days, I will be waiting for you
I am a senior at Port of Los Angeles High School. This piece was given to me as an assignment in my creative writing class. It was interesting to complete because I had no previous understanding of Shabbat. It was a challenging piece, but I am very proud of it!
