Mask of Hate
The smile on my face hides the darkness inside,
A strong iron mask of things I’m forced to hide.
But it’s cracking, it’s chipping, as the fire inside
Flickers and sputters as its light slowly dies.
Inside my soul screams, screams, screams to be heard,
But it’s drowned out by hate, blasting over every word.
“You’re not good enough”, “It’s over”, “you’re done”
Oh, you blissfully think that the battle’s been won.
But it’ll always be raging, as long as I’m here
You’ll realize that I’m not the one you should fear.
You should fear yourself, if you look inside, dig deep,
Find the monster that’s waiting, stirring up in its sleep.
You think that it’s me, but oh, that’s where you’re wrong.
You seriously believe that it’s me who’s that strong?
No, the only true power is the power of hate
You can hide all you want, it’s already too late.
Hate isn’t something from which you can hide,
For how do you escape something lurking inside?
You were born with it in you, and it grew as you did,
Both your biggest strength and fault of which you will never be rid.
So put your mask on, convince yourself you’re all right,
Keep lying to yourself about your internal light.
There is no light there, not anywhere in humankind,
It’s been crushed by “free will”, by each human mind.
We seem convince we’ll survive, no matter the cost
But it’s that exact same mentality that means we’ve already lost.
If we try to justify the horrible things that we do,
We’ll just keep on doing them, without having a clue
As to what our progress means to the rest of the world
We’ll plan for our future, but never see it unfurl…
This was written during a really hard time in my life. I didn't feel seen or heard, and someone close to me who found this poem helped me get myself back into a healthy mental state. I'm eternally grateful to them.
