The Red Cardinal
I watched the burgundy red cardinal perched on that branch for hours
As still as a statue, just relaxing, enjoying the nice florida weather
Curiosity filled my body as I wondered,
Is this my grandpa’s way of watching over us?
He had just passed the day before.
Knowing he was watching over us like the clouds in the sky,
I wondered if his soul could be resting in this cardinal.
I’ve been told before that cardinals are a sign of male ancestry.
The cardinal continued to sit peacefully on that branch
Not just then, but for the next week did I spot the cardinal in the same place
It comforted me, knowing I still had a piece of my grandpa with me.
The sparkly sun shined softly through the lanai
Searching for spots of water to soak up near the pool.
My whole family saw the cardinal that week, all thinking the same thing
‘What if this is his sign to us?’
Chirp! Chirp! Chirp! The cardinal spoke as he flew above the house
Circling back and forth over and over again
Like this was his kingdom and it was his job to protect it
Whether it really was my grandpa or just a coincidence,
It brought me hope and that’s what I needed.
