The Debtless Night (or, What to Do After it Rains)

Mercy walks on two feet
smiles softly
and rests its cheek against
the windowpane
leaving a fog of its warm breath
against cold glass
while outside
the air has just been washed
and in the bright night
it’s almost blinding
and you do nothing.
