Drowning
He wiped the tears off my face and pulled me into a warm embrace.
The solemn words, “I love you,” sounded so true in his voice.
I don’t want to leave but I don’t have a choice now.
I stared into his eyes and felt the pierce of his sorrow.
We put up with each other for so long,
Been in love since we were so young.
If this is what it means
The fighting and the screams
Our love was the deep and endless ocean.
Unexplored, dangerous, yet tranquil, I swam alone.
He stood like Hephaestus where the memory trees grow, and set a fire to all that I know.
Out on the land, he avoided the water.
Struggling to stay afloat, I treaded harder.
I gave him another chance to be better,
I thought that a love like this was rare.
If it hurts to love, then it must be real.
If this is what it means
The fighting and the screams
We’re both in the water now.
But the willingness to swim won’t show.
He pulls himself out and holds his hand over the sea, but with no strength in his grasp, he lets go of me.
I accept the truth as my head goes under,
And he walks away from us forever.
I sink towards the Earth, where there is nothing but coldness, darkness, and loneliness.
If this is what it means
The fighting and the screams
