I Am Broken... (A Reverse Poem)
I am broken
And I refuse to believe
I can be happy
Happiness can be achieved
Still
They say
“She committed suicide at 16”
Will be on the news
“She conquered her demons”
Is a lie
I can never be happy
Especially when people say
Happiness is possible
The voices in my head tell me
I am better off dead
I don’t think
There is hope
The proof that
Happiness
Is an emotion my brain cannot make
Sadness
Is a feeling I know too well
Happiness
And hope will return only if I flip the script.

This piece was inspired by a person very close to me who is struggling with depression and mental health. I wanted to give them a bit of hope and a chance to see that they are not broken. As it says in the title, this is a reverse poem and can be read two ways; if you only read it one way, you will know half of the journey but not the rest.
