Hi, good to see you, or nice to meet you.
What grade am I in? A senior. Yeah, time flew.
That’s when they say, “Oh, have you started to apply?”
That’s it. No “What's up?” They just wait for a reply.
Everywhere I go, it’s always the same.
It doesn’t matter if it’s family or someone who’s only just learned my name.
“What are your plans, and where will you go?
What will you do? Why don’t you know?”
I’m expected to have it all figured out.
Barely an adult, supposed to know what life’s all about.
Not much of a past, but I should know my future?
When you were little, did you know who you were?
We used to be told to always dream large,
But now that we’re older, it comes with a charge?
They say, “Be more real, follow expectations
Think of the money, ignore all temptations.
Do what you love, but what is the pay?
That’s a silly degree, you’ll regret it one day.”
Okay, but what about me? Wasn’t that the question?
It’s my life, my future, my profession.
Sure, I may not have everything planned,
But as the ones asking questions, you’d think they’d try to understand.
