The Act of Procrastination

10:25 Pm.

This happens all the time,

Ignoring my work up until the last minute

I’ll finish it later, I would say,

I have time, I would lie.

Since I was young you have plagued me,

Unable to get out of this downward spiral

Of repeating the same method on every single project

I always get it in on time, I would say,

It always works out, I would lie.

My method always gets my work in before the due date

Looming over me like death.

And I still finish my work before the clock strikes midnight

I can finish it in time, I would say,

I don’t need to worry, I would lie.

But, you don’t always have due dates

You’re not always a shadow whispering in my ear

You’re running out of time, you would say.

You need to finish this, you would demand,

I know I’m running out of time

I know with this method I will never escape you

But, I will slay this repetitive cycle,

Starting tomorrow.

The author's comments:

I have always struggled with procrastination. Even since I was young, I was always rushing to get my homework done at the last minute. I decided to write my poem, “The Act of Procrastination,” about my struggles with procrastination. I used imagery and synthesia to convey my experience and how it feels for me to procrastic. I really enjoyed writing this poem (which I did indeed procrastinate when writing). I feel as if the poem might be able to help explain procrastination to people who don't procrastinate or not as often.
