Let us raise a toast, to the things I love most

To the good and the bad,

All the happy and sad

Let us raise a toast

Here’s to the girl who sat at my lunch table on the first day of middle school,

You stuck around for years even after I was so cruel

And the boy in History, who doesn’t quite like me

He constantly makes me laugh ‘cause his jokes are so funny

And let’s give a hand to the one I talk to

About things she doesn’t understand

She goes out of her way to make sure I’m okay

Let us raise a toast, to the things I love most

To the dreams and the nightmares

To the hushed whispers and hard stares

Let us raise a toast

To the educators who teach outside of the classroom

That listen and understand,

The ones who actually give a damn

Thank you for lifting voices instead of watching us drown

It can be so hard in this small-minded town

So let’s raise a toast to the things I love most

Thank you for mangoes and rockets

For dresses with pockets

Books and movies, music that’s groovy

For clothes to thrift and Taylor Swift

Let us raise a toast

Here’s to all those times death knocked on my door

And I said “not today”

Here’s to the times I’ve loved

And the times I’ve been betrayed

Life is a mosaic of everyone you’ve ever met

So here’s a toast to knowing that not everything is set.

My English assignment was to curate a "Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude" (which is a poem by Ross Gay that we read in class). The assignment was very opened ended and while I was at work, I created this short poem in 15-20 minutes. Shoutout to Mr. Watts for encouraging me to publish this.
