What I Really Wanna Say Is..... (Slam poem)

What I really wanna say is

Nothing

What I really wanna say is that, I wish we had more lack of that

Jibber-jabber

Useless, yelling words about your opinion, my opinion

And all the hate that threads them together

Because in our modern world of words, easier spoken, we lose sight of the fact that it’s the ones closest to us

That make the most waves

What I really wanna say is, people like to be self-righteous

They like to think that if they speak with the same words of a wronged person, they are automatically right

They like to think that just because their heart skips a beat that it must mean the world is broken

They need to fix it

It is not your job to make me the handyman to your broken dreams

I am all that I can be

Don’t you see?

What I really wanna say is, I can live however I wanna live

Whether you agree or not

Because, in the end, it’s not up to you who I decide to run to

What I really wanna say is, just ‘cause the First Amendment says we can say anything

Doesn’t mean you should say it

What I really wanna say is, I’m sick of the back and forth

The “holier than thou” attitude that plagues this country like the disease we have to fight through to get angry

What I really wanna say is, just because you like your opinion does not make it right

For that girl sitting next to you

Maybe the one in the back of the room

Maybe me, the person you like to ignore when you claim it’s “all inclusive”

Why did you close the door?

You say, “Keep out, honey, you don’t believe what I believe.”
What I really wanna say is, what you’re doing

Surrounding yourself with people who share the same wavering wave length is that

It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy

The one you made up in your basement of storied lies

Immortalized in your endless fight for equality

Didn’t realize equality meant we all think the same thing

But I don’t say that

Because you have the right to your life like I have the right to mine

So, don’t take that away from me

Understand?

A man named Miranda gave me the right to remain silent under the law you like to dissolve every time you speak

No, assume

That just ‘cause I don’t speak I’m immoral

Well, let me tell ya, I’m fine with being immoral if it means I get to keep mine

In my back pocket, waiting to use them on the day when you realize that you successfully repeated

History

And alienated a new breed of human being who will come back with their deafening silence and make you see

That it was better when the wars didn’t come from our tongue and break through our teeth

So, what I really wanna say is, quit talking

Do something real about it

Say nothing and pick up a pen

Start a new nation that doesn’t take to arms every time someone says something “wrong”

Because wrong is in the eyes of the beholder

Maybe you should actually take it up with the law

Quit whining like a child, and say something

Not just the same montra we’ve already heard that herds us away like cattle

Make the change firm, not ethereal

But, back to my point,

What I mean to say is

Nothing
