I sit in history class and listen to my teacher speak

Of Egyptians and Aztecs and Mayans Of Incas

He shares diluted knowledge                     She shares history

As I seethe                                                    and lean closer in fascination

He makes them seem barbaric             different from my teacher who taught the rest

Empire simple and poor                 empire magnificent and devastatingly powerful

Confounded gods and their           temples of gold

Barren roads of                               intricate pathways, still standing and unrivaled

Dwells on the lack of writing,             ignores complex systems of string

Paints a picture of conquerors, not   showing the magnificence they destroyed

Says ‘for the technology they had’   ignores one of the world's strongest empires

Teaches conquerors as merely bad not evil or vile

And there is not enough truth in his words For me to agree

The author's comments:

This piece was written based off of my own experience of the way differnt cultures teach the same topic. The male teacher mentioned was my American World History teacher. The woman was my Ecuadorian History teacher. They both taught about Incas, however there were clear differences in their information and tones.
