Evenfall

When dawn arises you are blinded by

A light that shines down on your laughing face

When Suns spread warmth and you so love the sky

Too soon the shadows are to take its place

The world will freeze without its tender glow

You tremble, frightened of the bleak unknown

Until a fierce wind blusters, wild, and blows

At last the kind Sun smiles and takes you home

When daylight wipes away the Dark’s ordeals

And tells you: ‘Move along; it’s long since passed’

When high above the Sun is perched in teal

Your heart in pieces, it still beams, steadfast

The Sun will light your path in life, ablaze

She laughs as you grow up and learn to run

And tries to call upon more happy days,

A time when you still needed loving Suns

When dusk first comes you flee and run and hide

But bloodred light breaks through the silver clouds

When you are lost and scream: ‘Who knocks my pride?’

Out comes the Sun and bellows: ‘You are loud,

My Man, am I forsaken by you? Son,

So soon will flames engulf you, know your faults,

Sad Boy, before my temper dooms your plans

For life without me in it, that must halt’

When up the sky is ink and down burns bright

Reflections of a million heavn’ly eyes

When all around your world is plunged to night

You hug your knees for your one Sun to rise

Your cheeks are shining now and not your smile

You, naïve youth, who did not once foresee

A fallen paradise, so choked and vile

When sunset comes, who owes apologies?

The author's comments:

I wrote "Evenfall" for a school assignment working with iambic pentameter. We were meant to have a repeated word, mine being "when," and several specific moments with literary devices. Mine ended up having some very Western influences, especially concerning Genesis, so I named it "Evenfall." Part of the inspiration was man's fall from grace, and part was because the poem itself ends right after the sun sets. I hope you enjoy!
