Veterans

May 13, 2019

Early in the morning, the veterans all get up,

They put on their finest clothes,

Sitting down, drinking their coffee cup

Their drinking slows,

Quietly they start to talk and whisper

Recalling the memories of old.

This causes some to start with a shiver.

Those stories have never been told

Today is a day of remembrance

Of their fallen comrades resting in the heavens

As the days of old crept slowly by

the fearful shells kept whistling by

Nightmares recalling advancing soldiers

Carrying the wounded on their shoulders

They captured men just like them

The enemy didn’t consider them men

But the joy of those they freed

And helping those with greatest need

Was worth it all in the end,

Though their wounds will never mend.

They did a very good deed

Those veterans drinking their morning coffee slowly get up and leave

To spend time alone and grieve
