Has It Always?
Has the ceilings always been this low?
I ducked down, trying to avoid the door frames.
Every room in this old house
makes me feel suffocated.
Have the chairs always been this small?
I carefully sat
on the beautiful memory
we built together.
Have I always been able to see my toes
when I lay down late at night?
The blanket that used to once engulf me
can no longer suffice.
Has Dad always been so peaceful?
It’s almost been a year
since the once energetic man
became dormant forever.
Has Mom always looked like this?
I lost track of time
when the once most beautiful woman
became old and wrinkled.
Has my home always been this lively?
The roof that used to hold one,
is now occupied by two,
and soon to be three.
